Where is HDPE pipe used?

HDPE Pipe are often used for municipal water supply. HDPE pipe is used in water distribution mains and service lines in the UK for 85% of new installations. A similar usage level is found in Italy. Overall in Europe, PE pipe is the favorite pipe material choice for water mains and service lines.

What is the origin of HDPE?

In 1953, Karl Ziegler, of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute, and Erhard Holzkamp invented high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Two years later, in 1955, HDPE was produced as pipe. For his successful invention of HDPE, Ziegler was awarded the 1963 Nobel Prize for Chemistry.

Today, plastic materials used for pipes are classed under thermosetting or thermoplastic resins. They exhibit attributes of toughness, flexibility, chemical resistance, and non-conducting electrical properties. Thermoplastic highway drainage pipes have been used for highway drainage since the early 1970s. Since then, growing out of applications for agricultural drainage, more HDPE drainage pipes have been installed than all other plastic pipes combined. (Plastic Pipe Institute, 2016)

What is the life expectancy of HDPE pipe in water applications?

Many installations of HDPE pipe in water applications are already reaching 50 years of successful service. The polyethylene pipe industry estimates a service life for HDPE pipe to conservatively be 50-100 years. This relates to savings in replacement costs for generations to come.

Is HDPE pipe a green solution for piping?

Yes. It is safe when manufactured, used, or recycled. It helps preserve water and electricity as there is no loss of water through the fused joint and the carbon footprint is less.

Will trenchless installation save money over open cut trenching?

Every day more utilities realize the advantages of trenchless technologies. More trenchless projects are being installed than in the past because of cost savings. Savings can result from quicker installations, faster permitting and design time, fewer disruptions to business and residents, less damage to parks and trees, and less disturbance to road beds (and subsequent road repair).
