Description of Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride(C-PVC) pipes system for hot and cold water

CPVC is a thermoplastic made by further chlorination of the polyvinyl chloride resin. This means its chemical composition is two carbon atoms bonded to each other with two hydrogen atoms and two chlorine atoms bonded to this double carbon unit. This molecule links with others to form polymer chains of CPVC. CPVC delivers superior resistance to degradation and provides a long service lifespan. In fact, the first piping systems using CPVC occurred in 1959 and are still working without a problem.

CPVC pipes are sized in two ways -- nominal pipe size (NPS references the diameter of the interior hole of the pipe) and copper tube size (CTS references the outside diameter of the copper tube size). Often, pipes using the NPS system are light gray, and pipes using CTS system are yellow. Both types of pipe will have their specifications printed on the side. And the pipe are packaged in straight length for the diameter for Sch 40 or Sch 80 piping is available up to a maximum diameter of 24 inches.

Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (CPVC) is a thermoplastic pipe and fitting system made with CPVC compounds meeting the requirements of ASTM Class 23447 as defined in ASTM Specification D1784. PVC pipes could only be used for cold water system, but C PVC service the temperatures can be extended by 60-70°F, is available for both cold water and hot water distribution.

The primary method of joining CPVC piping systems is solvent-cementing for glue installation.

Safe, Clean Water Quality: Qualified CPVC potable water system does not transfer any harmful and dangerous products to the drinking water it transports. Joint Strength: CPVC pipe and fittings are fused together using solvent cement. Solvent cement is a substance that chemically fuses a pipe to a fitting at the molecular level. Unlike glue used in other piping systems, solvent cemented joints become the strongest part of the pipe system, and if properly installed don’t break apart.

Chlorine Resistance: Chlorine-based disinfectants, especially chlorine dioxide can cause pipe failures in PPR (green pipe), PEX and metallic pipes. However, CPVC is unaffected by the chlorine and will never fail thanks to the additives used to keep your water clean and safe.

Biofilm Resistance: Water distribution systems are ideal for bacterial growth, but CPVC helps to keep water pure. Multiple international studies have confirmed that CPVC consistently outperforms copper and all other plastic piping materials, especially PPR, with regard to its ability to resist the formation of biofilms.

Fire Resistance: CPVC is fire resistant and will not support combustion. In other words, CPVC won’t help to spread a fire, unlike other plastics that can catch fire and continue to burn after the source has been removed.
